Before the Y

I was a stay-at-home mom who was new to Martinsville so I did not get out much.  I was overweight, unhappy, even depressed and getting very little physical activity.

My Wake Up

I avoided pictures for years.  My sister shot a photo of me at her daughter’s birthday party.  When I saw it, I was in shock.  I could not even recognize myself.  It was so hard to believe that I was so young, yet so unhealthy!  I decided right then, enough was enough!

Why the Y

I tried several gyms in Martinsville.  I ended up choosing the Y at first because my kids loved the Y.  They loved going to play in the child watch room.  I loved that my kids were happy and excited to come.  I also loved that I never felt judged at the Y so I kept coming back.  All of the members and instructors were friendly and inviting.  I was invited to multiple classes and tried many of them.  It was probably Anita that made me feel the most comfortable.  She modified workouts for me at the beginning and eventually I could keep up with all workouts.  Anita has such an upbeat and happy personality and it is contagious!

Now I am healthy and happy.  I am able to out-play my three crazy kids.  I still come to the Y almost every day because I love it!  The Y feels like family!

The Y has something for everyone-young to old, beginner to advanced.  I would not be where I am today without the Y.  I probably could have gotten fit at another gym, but in order to actually lose weight and make a change, it is so important to have a supporting group.  The people at the Y helped me to want to make that step, for me and because of the family environment.  Everyone at the Y cares-the staff, the instructors and the personal trainer.  I cannot recommend the Y enough!  I now have family members that go there and love it as much as I do.  My kids love the Y; they have met their best friends there.  My kids are involved with Y sports programs and went to preschool there.

People choose the Y for many reasons; they stay for the same reason.  The Y is family.
